"Any exposure to an international environment such as this can only benefit a student as no textbook can describe or teach the experience. I would like to thank Two Worlds United for this opportunity as my experience has been exceptional, above all expectations and I can only hope that the program can grow from strength to strength so that future students can be granted this rare valuable opportunity. The most important part of the Two Worlds United experience is not what was learnt during the semester but rather the friends and contacts that were made from around the world. These contacts will prove vital in terms of launching an international career or even for personal future business endeavors. My personal ambitions have definitely changed from a pure American perspective towards a globally orientated view of the world." Mark D. Illinois Year in France 2006 Cultural Adjustment is an important factor in a successful experience as an international student. Students who strive to adjust to the new culture will not only be more successful but will learn more from the host culture during their stay abroad. Learning about the host culture takes patience, dedication, attention to detail and a willingness to consider new perspectives. As an international student, it is the duty and responsibility of the student to adapt to the host culture and to consider ways in which the new culture may best be assimilated while maintaining a sense of self from the native culture. It is difficult to begin a discussion on cultural adjustment without starting by defining the word "culture" and what makes culture. Culture is defined as "the arts, beliefs, customs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought created by a people or group at a particular time." If you were to ask several different friends what they thought culture meant, they might come up with things like: • beliefs and ideas • manners and customs • ideas and thought patterns • religious beliefs • ceremonies and rituals • language • arts and artifacts • social institutions • laws (written & unwritten) • myths & legends • knowledge • values and morals
